    Mokumé Gane, meaning wood-grain metal in Japanese, is an ancient form of metal-smithing first developed by Japanese sword-smiths who made samurai swords and hilts out of varied alloyed steel. This mokumé is composed of sterling silver and recycled 16 karat red gold. The process begins by kiln-fusing 26 alternating layers of the metals together and then, once removed from the kiln, forging them to increase the bond.

    Hand-fabricated mokumé gane composed of sterling silver, copper, and brass with inlaid spider web tuquoise (Kingman, Arizona). This ring is approximately 8mm wide and 1.4 mm thick.

    This ring was hand-fabricated from silver, nickel, copper and brass sheet metal.  The Mokumé was kiln-fused and then hand etched and carved to create the pattern.  Jet (hard bituminous coal) from Russia was inlaid in a channel in the middle of the ring and is a continuous band around the full circumference of the ring.

    This ring was inspired by a graph. Hand-forged from silver and mokume gane sheet that was then inlaid with variscite (green) from Utah and Sugilite from South Africa.

    I hand-forged these earrings from mokume gane sheet stock that I produced in 2001. The earrings were dapped half-round and drilled at the top so they move freely from the shepherd's hooks.

    This pendant is a geometrically inspired slide. It was forged from mokume gane sheet stock and features a knife-edge marquis chrysocolla cabochon bezel-set in sterling silver.

    This pendant was made to match the circle earrings. Fabricated from mokume gane sheet metal that I dapped half-round and backed with silver sheet. A granulated 10kt gold bail was added later.

    I designed this pendant in collaboration with Katie Hogan. Thanks go to her. Hand-fabricated from silver and mokume gane sheet stock. I cut the sunstone which originated in Tanzania. I mined and cut the opal doublet which I pulled from the earth in Spencer, Idaho. Both stones are set in 14kt yellow gold.

Mokume

It means “wood grain metal” in Japanese. This technique involves laminating different types and alloys of metal and then forging and folding them to create patterns similar to wood. It originated in ancient Japan where it was used to create swords out of varied alloyed steel.
